Earth
Temples, Fires & Mandolins
Stefano Resta
2003
The ecstasy created by Nature in its wholeness/holiness
meets, in these poems, the assaults that are eroding relentlessly
life’s very origin. The poet, armed with love, – (what
happened to love, in poetry?) – and keen perception, is
joining the battle. His active immersion in passions and
events brings to the poems an epic and baroque quality.
In some instances, he seems to disappear behind his words
so that spontaneous though deep-rooted illuminations come
forward the way, for example, the moon breaks out through
the clouds.
There is from page to page an urgency for life which,
in a circular motion, links past and present, the mind
with its surroundings…and reaches the metaphysical transcendence
transcending the natural or material order paroxysm of
a ritualistic dance.
From the galaxies down to the kitchen, its smells and
its recipes, Stefano Resta discards the usual ontological
hierarchies taken for granted by Western Literature and
establishes a democracy of Being which is real, long overdue,
and revolutionary.

July 1996
Stefano Resta is an exuberant and intelligent writer.
His poems, rooted both in nature and his own body, exude
the joy and surprise and patience of someone who takes
time to pay close attention.
-- Anne Lamott
Stefano Resta’s great talent is for imagery, for writing
through the senses… I realize what a richly complicated
and edged and textured world of the senses he has presented.
-- Thom Gunn
A lyrically located narrative line. Grounded, in an Eden-like
land. Childhood adventures. California North Coast, the
Islands, the Desert. Visual, sculptural, naturally romantic.
"The coast is always pushing forth new language" ... "Sounds
and rivers, and garage sales" ... "The technician of what
is real, truly." Meet Stefano Resta and see how he takes
off towards the golden sea.
-- Joanne Kyger
The work brings together two very different poetic traditions
- the magic, other worldly images of European and Latin
American poetry, and the vigorous muscular description
of the real world that comes from North American poetry.
The result is a powerful, evocative, very original style.
-- Ed Smallfield
